Tom complex
(= translocase of outer membrane)
Transport complex of the outer membrane of mitochondrion. The complex contains eight different proteins: Tom40 (40 kD) forms the 2.2nm hydrophilic pore and spans the outer membrane; Tom5, Tom6 and Tom 7 are embedded within the membrane adjacent to Tom40, Tom20, Tom 22, Tom37, and Tom70 are on the cytosolic face with Tom22 on the inner face as well. The comparable system in chloroplasts is the Toc complex.
